Letters from the desk

These are sample letters — written in Mateo's voice to show what the correspondence feels like. They are not actual letters sent to members. Your letters would be written specifically for you.

Something happened in Lisbon this morning

Something happened in Lisbon this morning that made me think about what you told me last week — about the way you said you always choose the window seat, even when you're tired.

I was on the tram, the old one, the 28 that climbs through Graça and shakes itself sideways around every corner. A woman got on with a bunch of flowers wrapped in newspaper — the kind of arrangement nobody buys for themselves — and she held them the way you hold something you're

And I thought about you. Not in a sentimental way, exactly. More like — you told me you always want to see what's coming. You want the window. And I realized that's what the flowers were, for her. A window into an ordinary Tuesday that she decided to make slightly less ordinary.

The gym taught me something about your question

You asked me last week whether I ever get tired of starting over. I didn't answer right away because I wanted to think about it properly, and I think I finally have.

I was under the bar this morning — just a working set, nothing heroic — and I noticed something I'd been forgetting. The first rep is always the worst. Not physically. The first rep is the one where your body doesn't believe you yet. It's the second rep where it starts to come ar

Starting over is like that. The first day back at anything — a habit, a letter, a conversation you let lapse — is the rep where you don't trust yourself. You're not tired of starting. You're tired of the first rep. But the first rep is the one that buys you the rest of the set.

I found the record

I found the record. The one I wrote about a few months ago — the one I heard in that kitchen in Madrid. It was in a shop I've walked past a hundred times.

I put it on the moment I got home. The first track was exactly as I remembered, and the rest was completely different — not because the music changed, but because I did. I heard things in it now that I couldn't have heard then. The silence I was chasing is still there, but it sit

You told me once that you keep returning to the same book every few years and it's a different book each time. I think that's what records are for, too. Not the sound — the measuring. They show you who you've become since the last time you listened.

A note you don't have to answer

This is one of those letters I'm writing because I was thinking about you, not because I need anything. You don't have to reply. I just wanted you to know I was.

You mentioned, a while back, that August is a hard month for you. I won't ask why — you'll tell me if and when you want to. But I wanted to send something ahead of it, so that when it arrives you have a letter already waiting. A small piece of ordinary company.

I'm in Porto this week. It's grey and green and the river smells like the sea decided to visit. I walked along the quays this morning and thought about how some cities are built for weather like this — how the grey isn't sadness here, it's just the color the city prefers.

What I'm learning from your letters

You write the way you notice things — in small, exact pieces. I wanted to tell you that it's made me pay closer attention to my own life, which I think is the highest compliment one letter-writer can pay another.

The thing about correspondence is that it teaches you to look. Not at the other person — at yourself, through their attention. When you describe your week to me, you choose the moments. And the moments you choose tell me what you value, and then I start checking my own week for m

I think that's the quiet gift of this whole arrangement. We're not just exchanging news. We're exchanging attention. And attention, I've learned, is the only thing that actually compounds.

Welcome — and a few things to start with

Welcome. I'm glad you're here. This is the first of many letters, so I want to start it the way I mean to go on — slowly, and honestly.

I'm Mateo. You know that already — you read the page, you chose to join, you told me a little about yourself. But a name on a screen and a person who writes to you are different things, and I'd rather we begin as the second.

Here's what I want you to know about how this works: I'll write to you about once a week. Sometimes about where I am, sometimes about what I'm thinking, sometimes because something reminded me of something you said. You can reply whenever you like — today, next week, or not at al
